Um... so I have a BIG problem with Utah drivers. I first learned how to drive in California (which is where I got my permit) and then had to retake driver's ed because I moved to a different state. I do think that the driver's ed course here (well at least at my high school) is pretty cool. Usually in California (at least where I was living) you have to go to a private entity to learn how to drive. So having a driving course in your high school's parking lot was really interesting to me. I felt stupid in the class though because Utah kids are really gung ho about driving right when they turn 16 so I was considered old in the class.
Anyways, I won't admit that I'm a perfect driver, I think I scare the bejeebies outta my passengers but I do feel pretty confident that I know how to work my way around traffic. While I realize I'm not perfect, I do have a few bones to pick with Utah drivers (and yes I do realize Utah drivers have bones to pick with California drivers, but just let me explain). First thing I realized when I moved here was that everyone had big massive trucks. Lots of little man syndrome if you ask me... but my opinion of that changed once the snow came and those little men were zipping past me in my old, beat up Dodge. I still hate the way those guys drive, it really makes me tick... especially when I'm on a date and they are trying to show off. Major turn off. I just find it really inconsiderate when people zip around people like they own the road. Drives me nuts.
I also don't understand why no one signals??? Like I have no idea what the person in front of me is going to do... like you can't think I know you are going to merge unless you signal! Also people merge like the last minute. For example if there was a construction sign that said to merge ages ago people ignore that and whip in last minute. Geez, thanks.
Being on the far left side means that's the fast lane. If you are going to be in that lane you need to make sure you are going faster than the guy behind you. If not MOVE over to the right. When people are idly driving in the fast lane the fast cars get ticked and then extreme cut to the right which is the SLOW lane and try to cut back over to the left lane cutting off the slow driver (who shouldn't be in the left lane to begin with). This causes accidents people!
No one honks. Like ever. Yet, it's OK to over exaggerate and cut someone off or give them a dirty look as you zip by. Sometimes I get really frustrated with this unspoken rule of not honking.
You know when you are at Lagoon and the day is done, you're dead tired, it's time to go home, but wait you can't because people aren't letting you go in front of them! Whenever you exit a major parking center and there are a lot of cars leaving at once you have to apply the every other principle, let someone in, you go, they let someone in, they go, etc. It's really not rocket science folks.
One last thing and then I'm done venting. Sorry, I know I'm passionate about this... but you may only be in the car pool lane if you have two or more drivers. Also you can't dodge in and out of that lane whenever you want to. There are lines that indicate whether you can move out of that lane or not. Usually the lane opens up so that people can make an exit or allow other cars with two or more passengers in. Just because someone is slow in front of you does not give you the right to get out of the lane to cut them off.
OK I'm done.
(yes, I know CA drivers are ridiculously fast, they don't stop at stop signs, and they honk... but they are very familiar with the rules of driving).
